Tommy Mitchell of Lurgan

International Referee. First referee in Ireland to be awarded the FIFA refereeing badge. On 18/11/1964 Tommy refereed the England v Wales International at Wembley, in the process, and at the age of 52 becoming the oldest ever referee to officiate at an English game. A record that wont ever be beaten due to referee restrictions today. Other distinguishing roles included refereeing the infamous "Battle of Belfast", N.Ireland v Italy in Belfast in 4th Dec 1957, and had the honour of being linesman at the prestigious 1963 England v Rest of the World Centenary match at Wembley Stadium. Tommy, a local baker of much repute, died in December 1998, and much of his family still live in the town of Lurgan
